The Differences Between Company Lists and Rosters

There is some confusion over what exactly the difference is between a Company List and a Roster in Unbridled Fury. Maybe this is because of an eloquence malfunction or just something I should have explained more clearly. Maybe both. Oooh. Me fix…

These two player creations each serve different purposes in the game, each is important but used at different times. Whilst the difference is explained in the rulebook, I’ll try a different approach here. So, to clarify:

The Company List is a document that outlines what kinds of figures a Company can field. It is a way of outlining all of your figures’ abilities on one handy reference sheet for use during gameplay. (If you use the record sheet from our download page, all of the calculations for points and PA costs are easier, too… and more importantly how you did it is clear to all players.)

These are the things that a Company List is:

  • A Summary of all of your figure types, not of how many there are;
  • A document that contains all of your Company’s gaming information;
  • An ‘army list’, if you will, from which you draw figures for games;
  • A list of everything you can field in a game, but don’t actually have to.
  • The Company List is not used to balance game forces, that’s the job of the Roster!

Rosters on the other hand are the actual figure quantities and points totals up to the agreed maximum for a game. The Roster has just quantities and total points written on it but no attributes or stats. It is able to be swiftly created from a Company List at any time. Even if that is just before a game(!). All of the calculations should have already been done if the Company List was fully prepared beforehand.

These are the things a Roster is:

  • A list of what figures you are bringing to a particular game or have set up for a particular points total (like a medium sized game at 1000 points, the size we normally play…);
  • A summary of how much everything costs laid out for quick reference (on a per-figure or per-profile basis);
  • A Roster is used to balance forces in a game;
  • That’s all. Everything else you worked out when you built your Company List!

There are some examples of Company Lists and Rosters in the forum and elsewhere in the blog. Here are some you can reference to get an idea of the difference:

The Company List for Bargerenden’s Rangers of the Gnethe, a company of Woodlander infantry that I throw around occasionally. Simple, with only two possible profiles, and therefore only two possible equipment configurations on the models. Notice there are no quantities specified. The Company List is only 4 PAs, leaving plenty of room for later expansion.

And here is a 1000 point Roster I have just made with that Company List for a game. Notice how simple it can be. You don’t have to embellish it at all (not unless you really want to, of course… :D ).

  • Bargerenden Egi (x1, Leader): 204 points
  • Rangers of the Gnethe (x8): 720 points
  • Total Company PV: 924 points

That’s the difference, in case it was unclear. I hope I’ve explained it better this time… Please let me know if there is still anything that is unclear or difficult to understand… :)

There is also my earlier article about writing Company Lists. It should come in helpful, especially with the downloadable worksheet.
