Lieutenant Découpeur’s Voltigeurs

The miniatures in this article were produced by Old Glory except for the Lieutenant (Foundry) and the cantiniére (Das Schwarze Auge). I must apologise for the poor focus on these images, I am in the process of reshooting them with a better setup… Updated now for 0.7.x Core.

Pour l’Empereur, Ou lui est vos Boules!

Lieutenant Découpeur is a man of fearsome reputation and his list of small unit exploits is longer than his arm. For weeks now he has terrorised the Prussian militia stationed near his part of the lines. But one morning that all changed when he was torn from his tent by a terrifying flash of light and a soul-shaking crump! Lifting himself from the ground he saw that many of his men lay dead or wounded, those few that were unhurt were dazed and beginning to tend to their comrades. He approached one of his Sergents and asked what happened. He did not know, but instead pointed at a number of dark shapes approaching them along the road. Découpeur did not recall a road near their camp, nor the weird, twisted trees… He ordered the survivors to their weapons in time to meet the strange blade wielding attackers that fell upon them in a mad frenzy.

What Was That?

Lieutenant Découpeur’s Company had somehow survived their first bloody encounter on that road. Their original strength of over one hundred was more than halved yet their tenacity has kept them together. They have made an alliance with a nearby village of humans, offering protection in exchange for a place to live, and have fortified it. Their original attackers (now nicknamed homme-bêtes) have struck on several occasions yet have not managed to shake the resolve of Découpeur or his men. However as winter begins to set in things may begin to change as the supplies that moved with them start to run low…

The Sergent has an essential role in coordinating the men both in the face of the enemy or away from it. Without these stoic individuals Lieutenant Découpeur may not have managed to keep the company together and victorious as long as he has.

The Grenadiers of Lieutenant Découpeur’s company are fierce veterans of the wars in Europe. They are solid fighters that form the backbone of the force. As their numbers have dwindled through constant fighting, Lieutenant Découpeur has been forced to use tham as an elite cadre to distribute amongst the voltigeurs for the battles ahead.

The Voltigeurs of Lieutenant Découpeur’s company are veterans of the Napoleonic Wars in Europe; they have faced all kinds of foes in rough and broken terrain and prevailed. The new challenges put forward by this new world have not dampened their fighting spirit, nor their ability to operate together as a unit no matter what fate throws at them.

Cantiniére

The local village provides more than just a home for the company; it also provides non-combatants to aid with tending the wounded and general camp chores. Occasionally some of the locals take things a bit far. Despite being gracious hosts the villagers are not immune from the company’s rules. (I have been using a Cantiniére as a protectee (non-combatant) for the purposes of the generated scenarios in the rulebook.)
