Creating a Company List

A quick note that this article is in the process of modification. Version 0.7.0 of UF will introduce some significant changes in the way that weapons are categorised and therefore the points system will be modified greatly to suit. Please check back for the changes.

One of the most important (and satisfying) parts of playing Unbridled Fury is the construction of a company list. The company list is in essence only a list of numbers and names, yet when we create them based on our favourite fantasy settings something special happens. They bring life to our small collections of miniature warriors. Suddenly the once generic metal, resin and plastic models are living, breathing creatures with agendas and resources to defend, at least on the gaming table…

There is a set procedure for making a list detailed in the rules, as of 0.5.1. Please ensure your rules are up to date. Earlier versions are no longer current.

Rekani formed up

I will demonstrate how a Company List is created for Unbridled Fury as of version 0.5.1 of the rulebook. I will do this by creating a list for some of the heavily armoured figures in my collection that I have named the "Rekani of Craes".

Right: A Rekani battleline formed up and ready for action. Note the weight of armour and enormous front rank shields. (Figures by Ral Partha)

The Rekani of Craes are a frontline fighting unit of a rather wealthy human City-State. They are uniformly equipped with plate armour, many with large shields, and are supported by well armoured crossbowmen who operate from their flanks. Their Drillmasters are exponents of the Cult of the Ape God Yuth’nerak, and their fanatically rabid bodyguards wear the ceremoniously prepared panoply of their cult. The Drillmasters fight in the ranks wherever possible to instill their unique form of iron hard discipline and command with a respect unknown outside their organisation, even amongst the Craesan population at large. Their cavalry is equally well armoured. Knights dressed in similarly baroque suits of armour ride sturdy warhorses into battle. They are occasionally supported by lightly armoured mounted archers who double as the army’s eyes and ears. The light cavalry are recruited from the farming counties controlled by the City-State and are hardy and robust fighters. For this Company List I’ll assume there are none available. Craesan Technomancers are also adept at building battle constructs, many which see service alongside the Rekani. Drillmasters always fight on foot. Cavalry are considered to be support troops in Craesan doctrine.

The list of troop types I’d like to add looks like this (I am aware that I may not be able to use all of them (of course if they are too expensive their profiles may be downgraded until they fit…). Note that giving non-missile armed figures a Shg attribute of 0 is perfectly OK - points would be wasted if an actual Shg value for a non-shooter was compulsory).

So the Profile Slots we need for this collection of troops are:

  • No Poor Profiles (nothing under 30 points)
  • Two Average Profiles (Rekan and Craesan Crossbowman) - this will cost 4 PAs
  • Five Elite Profiles (both Craesan Knights, Rekan Shieldsman, Rekan Sergeant and Yuth’nerakish Guard) - this will cost 20 PAs (there is a problem already - we have 24 PAs and haven’t got any other characters yet!)
  • One Special Profiles (Craesan Standard Bearer) - this will need 8 PAs!

Rekans with an avatar of their god!

The problem here of course is that the total PAs needed for this lot is 4 + 20 + 8 = 32 PAs! We are only allowed 25. Something will have to go. But what to do? Of the profiles listed, there are two Knight profiles. I can take this to one (it will require some conversion of my figures, but that’s OK. I’ll remove the lance armed Knight profiles and keep the profile with the basics. I’ll drop the Standard Bearer from the list as well. This gives me 12 PAs less, so my total drops to 28 PAs, still too high!

Left: Rekans advance, led by a Craesan Knight and supported by a mighty avatar of the Ape God Yuth’nerak himself! (Rekans and Knight by Ral Partha, Ape Avatar by Schleich.)

There is no way that this force can drop any of its profiles to below 30 points. In my view the force is too elite for that. So the only real option is to drop the combat abilities of the regular troops (to get 3 PAs we only need to drop two profiles to average status from elite. Alternatively I can drop the profile of the Guard by reducing their cost. I decided to reduce the Rekans’ profiles to compensate. This will mean that their profiles will go from Elite Profiles to Average Profiles and fit in the 25 PAs we have allocated to create the list.

The Profile Slots now look like this:

  • No Poor Profiles (nothing under 30 points)
  • Four Average Profiles (Rekan, Rekan Shieldsman, Yuth’nerakish Guard and Craesan Crossbowman) - this will cost 8 PAs
  • Three Elite Profiles (Craesan Knight, Yuth’nerakish Guard and Rekan Sergeant) - this will cost 12 PAs

We have a total of 20 PAs. I am happy with that, and see so need to add any more profiles at this point. I could add another 4 PA profile, but I decide to save that for later in case something becomes available that I really want to put in there.

I now have all of the profiles I desire (and I am below the maximum 25 PAs) so I can write my list in its final format:

I am now free to pick my troops from this list for every game that I play. Everything I need is there to quickly create a roster quickly. I do not need to worry about optional stuff, possibilities for characters, adding or removing equipment or what spells to give my Sorcerer (not that this Rekani list actually has one…). I have worked it all out already.

If this process is disconcerting, never fear. The plan is to produce a number of official Unbridled Fury Company Lists. We'll use this system to set up those lists as well, so that the lists created by players will be on par with the official ones.

Happy list writing!
